Storage Overflow

Today, many of us are face with the problem of handling growing data. How do we keep this data and how can we prevent the lost of these precious (if not critical data). Our music files, photos & documents are all in digital format and the rate of growth of these data is at alarming and the chances of losing these data is relatively high if you do not have a proper back-up strategy. It can be costly to recover a failed hard disk. Therefore, perhaps we should give it some thoughts today for long term sake. I saw this NAS (Network Attached Storage) product and find it pretty good in terms of the features. It supports RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disk) 0, 1, 5 and JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disk). Besides the capability of having RAID, it does have Auto Rebuild function too. Essentially, what it means it that, say you are doing RAID 5 with 3 disk and should 1 HDD fails, you can plug in a new HDD and the data will be rebuild on this new HDD. Since it support SATA, it allows the hard disk to hot-swap (meaning just plug out the failed disk and plug in the new one without having the need to power down).

This NAS supports up to 4 HDDs. Assuming we plug 4 x 500GB HDDs into the NAS, configure it to RAID 5, we get about 1 Terabyte of usable space. Which is about 75% of total hard disk space.
